William Beaumont Professor and Chair, Department of Pharmacology and Physiology

Saint Louis University School of Medicine

Internationally recognized pharmacologist studying the molecular mechanisms of neuropathic pain and translating fundamental discoveries into novel non-opioid therapeutics.

Daniela Salvemini is the William Beaumont Professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, with secondary appointments in the departments of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience and chemistry. She is also the founding director of the Institute for Translational Neuroscience. As chair, she leads strategic initiatives to advance interdisciplinary research, faculty development and translational science across the department and university.

Salvemini earned her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacology from King’s College London and her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of London under the mentorship of Nobel Laureate Sir John Vane. She completed postdoctoral studies at the William Harvey Research Institute in London and at Monsanto in St. Louis in discovery pharmacology. Prior to joining Saint Louis University, she spent 15 years in the private sector leading drug discovery and development programs focused on novel analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents.

Her research has led to major discoveries defining molecular and signaling mechanisms underlying neuropathic pain and neuroinflammation and guiding the development of innovative non-opioid therapeutic strategies.

She has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles (H-index 89; >28,000 citations, Google Scholar 2026), placing her among the most highly cited investigators in biomedical research. Her work has been continuously supported by the NIH, the Department of Defense, foundations and private-sector partners.

Salvemini has also played a key role in translating her discoveries toward clinical application, founding SLU-affiliated biotechnology ventures developing novel therapies for pain and neuroinflammatory diseases. She is also the founder of the St. Louis Translational Pain Research Forum, a collaborative hub for academic, clinical and industry scientists.

She has served on numerous national committees and advisory boards, including NIH Study Sections (NIDA, NCI, NINDS), the NINDS External Consultant Board for the Preclinical Screening Platform for Pain, the U.S. Association for the Study of Pain, and as Councilor of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET).

Her contributions have been recognized with multiple prestigious awards, including the Novartis Award in Pharmacology, the Pharmacia-ASPET Award in Experimental Therapeutics, the Mitchell B. Max Award for Neuropathic Pain (American Academy of Neurology) and the Outstanding Scientist Award from the Saint Louis Academy of Science. In 2024, she delivered the NIH Director’s Lecture Series, one of the NIH’s most visible and prestigious lecture series.

Salvemini is a fellow of the Saint Louis Academy of Science, the National Academy of Inventors, the Saint Louis University Research Institute and ASPET.
